Movie Notes about twist / empathy / character arcs from :《黑手遮天》Ray Donovan /《功夫》Kung Fu Hustle /《核爆家園》Chernobyl

A Twist is about changing audience's perception of a character
  • Ray Donovan - paint micky as the bad guy for 9 episodes, on the 10th episode when Sully is going to kill him, there is a big reveal he isn't the bad guy that killed Colleen, perception of him is flipped from bad to good
  • Thai Heart Transplant Commercial - in the beginning, paint the guy as a sicko caring for girl A, then there is a twist, the sicko is really a father that lost girl B, and her heart is inside girl A.

Make Evil Characters Empathetic
  • War of the Spark - use Liliana Vess, the dark sorcerer's compassion for the mother and child killed in the wreck to give her character humanity.
  • Kung Fu Hustle - make axe gang empathetic by letting them kill the gangsters that was causing havoc in the police station.

Character arc is about bad decisions and wrong turns or good decisions and right turns, leading the character to where he or she is today
  • Chernobyl - if in the end of the film, a character does a very kind gesture, make him a cold person in the beginning of the film, that is how I felt about Skarsgard's character in Chernobyl.

Scenes that made me cry, is about a long hard setup, with a final payoff
  • Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile - there are countless scenes of people overpowering Bundy, and no one believed him, but finally Carole Ann did, this part made me cry, because the long wait payed off.
  • Game of Thrones - Brienne always stood up for Jamie, even though he was on the other side, finally in the end, Jamie knights Brienne, this part made me cry,  because she is so deserving and it's finally made official.

Editing
  • The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo - uses young guy smoking to connect to old guy smoking, to show it's the same person.
  • Godfather - outside in the garden is cheerful family time, inside in the house is dark mafia time.

Details
  • Mortal Engines - there is a fire explosion reflection in the guy's sunglasses

戴森先生的 Dyson 吸塵器

一直都以為創意是天才的事，是天馬行空，是天外飛來一筆。看完戴森先生的故事才發現自己誤會創意了。 其實創意是有軌跡可循的，並不是什麼，天上掉下來的靈感。 Dyson 吸塵器，是戴森先生結合「伐木場氣旋吸器」發明出來的。折疊式嬰兒推車，是麥卡倫先生結合「噴射戰機折疊起落架」發明出來的。大量印紙技術，是古騰堡先生結合「葡萄酒壓榨技術」發明出來的。其實創意就是種結合，不相干產業的結合。 但是故事到這裡還沒結束。 戴森先生從結合到發明，中間共試了 5127 種原型機種。五千次後，創意才被執行出來。沒有這段鑽研就沒有這個 Dyson 吸塵器的創意。 故事還是沒結束，摘錄書中的一段: 「所以，能創新、能鑽研的公司在市場上就一定是贏家嗎? 不是。 贏得市場靠的是規範。 微軟不是發明電腦運算表的。亞馬遜也不是發明線上書店的。戴森先生也不是第一個提出氣旋吸塵器的人，不是第二個，也不是第三個，很多人提出過，但是他是唯一一個試了五千次，還同時能建立規範，確保品質一致，能無瑕疵供給，無縫供貨的人。」 規範就是動畫圈說的 pipeline。常常有長輩問我，你們做動畫的一定很有創意。看完戴森先生的故事讓我領悟到: 創意根本唯不足道。真正完整的故事是: 創意只佔了流程非常小的一部分，大部分的時間都用在鑽研，更多時間用在訂規範。 這才是真正，創意的軌跡。
